TLDR: Gl.iNet Slate 7 isn't worth it.

Since I've had a few people ask If I'll be making a dedicated mount for the Gl.iNet Slate 7 travel router that came out earlier this year, I wanted to address this directly. I get the appeal of of seeing a new, shiny thing and assuming its better in every way. But I've been around long enough to know this isn't always the case. When you compare what's actually there, the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

At the moment, I have dedicated mounting options for the Beryl AX and the Slate AX. Both of which are support IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax (WiFi6) these are low-powered devices that can be beneficial to have on set.
If you want to know more about their potential, read my previous post: "What's that for?": Why you Might Want a Travel Router

As it stands, I currently have no plans to make a dedicated mount for the GL.iNet Slate 7, and here’s why:

  • Limited WiFi7 Benefit:
Currently the only devices that would be on set that even support WiFi7 are iPhone 16-17 and they only do it halfway. They only use half the channel width supported at 160MHz and not the full 320MHz. But I'll refrain from going into the nitty gritty of this. There's just not much gain over WiFi6 or 6e on them as it stands. And since Macbooks and iPads can't take advantage then why bother?
  • Range and practicality:
While Wi-Fi 7 has a theoretical speed advantage this is only achieved under ideal, close-range conditions. As little as 1-2 meters away from the source can see the speed cut in half. How often are your devices that close on set or in conditions that are ideal?
  • Higher power draw:
The Slate 7 uses more power (almost 2x the other models) so this is not ideal for it's on set use where battery power is being utilized.
  • No practical advantage:
For it's use cases on set there would be no advantage over the Beryl AX or Slate AX as the data rates required aren't a bottleneck. Screen sharing, Live for Studio and Capture Pilot aren't high bandwidth. The other models can soundly handle multiple clients for these purposes.

Overall I don't suggest the Slate 7 for anyone using them on set. They aren't a good value when they can offer no real world advantage on set over the previous models. Save your money, stick with the other models.
